Confirm the annual grossPortuguese offers often quote a monthly salary paid fourteen times. Work out the annual total before comparing it with anything.
Ask about the meal allowanceSubsídio de alimentação is common and partly tax-free, especially on a meal card. It is not in the salary figure.
Check whether IRS Jovem appliesYounger workers in their first years of income may have part of it exempted. Tell your employer if you qualify.
Ask about the IFICI regimeIf you are moving to Portugal for a qualifying role, the regime has to be registered with the tax authority by a deadline. Ask whether your employer's activity qualifies.
Get a NIF and a Social Security numberYour employer needs both to pay you. The NIF comes from the Autoridade Tributária; the Social Security number from Segurança Social.
Check the contract typeFixed-term and open-ended contracts differ in notice, severance and renewal. Ask which you are being offered.

Questions before you sign

Are the holiday and Christmas subsidies taxed?

Yes, like the rest of your salary. They may be paid in full in their month or spread across the twelve monthly payments by agreement.

Does living in Madeira or the Azores change the tax?

Yes. Both regions apply lower rates to the same base. The calculator uses the mainland scale.
